Yorktown was able to edge out Willowbrook and Chappaqua by less than 10 points at the conference championships on Saturday, with a total of 262 points in the competition. The title is their first in the most competitive and largest of the five conferences since 2005.
“Swimming is an important skill to learn. I encourage parents to take their children to swim lessons and swim clinics to get confident with the skill,” head coach Margit Cooley stated. “At the Yorktown Swim team, we keep competition fun, and stay away from any pressure.”
Some of the top individual performances for Yorktown in their championship run came from Annelise Abulencia, who set a Yorktown record in the 25-yard freestyle with a time of 19.22. Luke Numme, Jason Muroski, Will Fagan, Remy Eppner and Alex Gorzula each also won their events. Julien Legros, Ryan Nikolic, Alexander Koch and Sam Nolan also teamed up to take the 200-yard freestyle relay.
"The Yorktown team is not just a swim team, we are family,” Cooley added. “It has been 13 years since Yorktown got a championship title. We have been working hard, and try to target weak areas to make them stronger. This is not a very easy task to do, when there is 156 swimmers on this team. I feel privileged to be a head coach to our team and see them grow, and get better. I thought we could win, but it still took me a little surprise. All the swimmers fought so hard, every age groups, it was great. What a day.”
Other division winners at the championship include:
- Division II: Ossining (277 points);
- Division III: Peekskill (222);
- Division IV: Mount Pleasant (259);
- Division V: Waccabuc (172).
